A SEA OF NATURE
Cartaya lies on the Atlantic COSAT in the southwest
of the Iberian Peninsula, well cummunicated by a magnificent
road and motorway (A-49) network and closet o de airports
of Seville (Spain) and Faro (Portugal). Beach and nature
come together in an area with a history of feudal conflict,
chich has conserved its traditions and maritime legacy
while also expliting the tourist potential of its major
attactions. This very personal stretch of the Huelva
coast is a land of protected areas, 19th century lighthouses,
golf courses and beach-side residential complexes.
The mosaic formed by the landscape around Cartaya offers
one of de most varied, spectacular panoramas in the
whole of Huelva province. It runs down to the Atlantic.
Ocean through the Ría del Rompido, which gives
its name to the traditional fishing village tucked away
in the River Piedras estuary, with the beaches of Nuevo
Portil and San Miguel to the east. On the other side
of the Ría is the Flecha del Rompido, a unique
geature on the Andalusian coast forming part of a protected
natural area of great ecological interest. And all this
is surrounded by pine groves and orange and strawberry
plantations.
Over
12.000 hectares of pine grove stretch form the centre
of Cartaya down to the shore. These groves can be divided
into two main areas; one to the north of de Campo Comun
de Arriba and one to the south and east of the Campo
Comun de Abajo, near the Malpica leisure area. Pines
also predominate in the town`s other two recreations
areas: Las Cumbres and the Pradera de San Isidro. The
vast woodland is very popular among activity tourism
enthusiast like, for example, ramblers. Three signposted
routes beggin al the popular Casa del Gato on the Cartaya-El
Rompido road and cross the Campo Comun de Abajo in the
direction of de beach al El Rompido, the Nuevo Portil
complex and Malpica, with ist water park and godkart
track. All of these itineraries allow the visitor to
admire the area´s great variety of mushrooms,
and in rainy autumns and springs species like delicious
lactarius and the local gurumelo, held in such high
esteem by gourmets, can be picked.
LAS MARISMAS DEL PIEDRAS WETLANDS
AND FLECHA DEL ROMPIDO
This officially recognized Natural Area comprises the
Marismas del Piedras wetlands and the Flecha del Rompido,
a 12 km long and 150 metrewide sadbank, formed by tidal
action, running parallel to de coast. It contains a
magnificently unspoilt beach accesible by boat from
the other side of the Ria.
The rich plant and animal life in this protected area
make it specially interesting for nature lovers.La Flecha,
inhabited only by firds like terns, seagulls and litlle
egrets, is an oasis of peace and tranquility. The habitat
is hared by other extremely rare endangered species
such as the osprey, the oyster catcher and the red crested
pochard. There are also chameleons and small mammals.
DREAM BEACHES
Cartaya possesses 14 km. of beaches with fine white
sands and calm sea, set amid beautiful pine groves.
For several decades it has been one of the most popular
tourist destinations on the Huelva coast. The coast
here is enhanced by luxurious tourist complexes and
by the areas´s marvellous climate, with its 3.000
hours of sunlight per year and an
average annual temperature of around 25ºC.
In Cartaya´s beach sectors (Nuevo Portil, San
Miguel y El Rompido) town planning has been carried
out as much as posible with tourist in mind, and the
quality of services and infrastructures is notable.
But the modern facilities are in no way incompatible
with the resort´s natural areas, where unspoilt
beaches like the one at La Flecha del Rompido can still
be found.
There are also many leisure and activity tourism opportunities
in close proximity to the beaches, the main sports facilities
being conveniently located. This is especially attractive
for those who wish to combine their favourite sports
with relaxin in the sun and bathing in the warm Atlanctic
waters.

El
Rompido Beach
The beach of Rompido is adjacent to the Natural Place
of the Swamps of the river Stones, fair in the beginning
of its creek, common destination for those who look
for some unbeatable conditions for the practice of nautic
sports.
In the fishing port you will find the best thing that
the sea gives to the traditional kitchen of the area.
The charm of this seafaring town and the freshness of
the fish and shellfish there smuggled, they have transformed
Rompido into a gastronomic destination of first order.
Nuevo
Portil and San Miguel Beaches
The beaches of New Portil and San Miguel lean out to
the sea from one of the most beautiful miradors in Huelva´s
coast.
Surrounded of pines and junipers, these wonderful beaches
have the lowest densities in the Spanish coast. The
active leisure and the nature are their values.
Nuevo Portil Beach leads you to the same beach where
is the pier of the same name and a step in boat to the
virgin beach of the Flecha del Rompido, just a few hundred
meters in front.
This residential and tourist area has sport facilities
that make of New Portil an
enviable area, bound to the nature and open to the sea.
It also has golf
course of 27 holes, designed to respect the beautiful
grove that possesses the place, located on a covered
cliff by a great forest of pines.
San Miguel Beach is also planned to receive a project
inspired by the active leisure, the nature and the sea.
These two fluvial beaches are connected with the virgin
beach of the coast arrow by means of services of boats
and barges in high season
